Seed Sown
Ten years ago today, my family laid to rest my father, Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. During his repast, a table-mate asked me a fateful question:
“April, would you consider running your father’s business?”
Caught off guard, I replied, “You know I’m a musician, right?”
We had an interesting exchange. Though a surprise, the question piqued my interest, and I continued pondering it over the weekend. During this time, I reflected on my father’s life and the impact of his work, seen and unseen, known and unknown; I read his inaugural book Beyond Race and Gender for the first time; I prayed profusely.
By Memorial Day 2013, just three days after that surprise conversation, I had reached a life-changing decision: I would return to Atlanta to run my father’s diversity consulting business.
SEED TRANSFORMED
This has been my primary focus since that moment. During this time, I have done my best to be a faithful steward of my father’s legacy. However, about five years into my tenure, I began to feel dissatisfied, disjointed. In the diversity space, I spoke “corporate-ese,” but everywhere else, “spirit-ese,” which was and has remained my native tongue. I wanted - NEEDED - to integrate the two, or at minimum, elevate the “spirit” life to a higher public position in my life.
That seed of integration was planted in August 2018. It lay dormant for four years until September 2022, when I began exploring this desired transformation in earnest. Coaching, prayer, and meditation have helped tremendously in this process. I continue the daily work of establishing my spirit-life as the primary platform from which I operate. As with all things of lasting value, it is a journey I am continually living out versus a destination I reach. I am grateful to be on this road of the journey.
In a masterful show of gracious orchestration, God has set the stage so that I am able to continue to support my father’s work in the world while simultaneously growing more into my desired elevation and integration.
NEW LIFE EMERGES
Thus it is with great joy that today, May 24, 2023, I announce that the planted seed is beginning to manifest. Ten years after that fateful conversation and on what would have been my father’s 79th birthday, I have founded Rachel’s Threshold, a burgeoning coaching platform that supports people in discovering their unique pathway to the Divine.
Additionally, I’m excited to share that we will launch our first workshop, Potential N2 Actuality: The Power of KAF In Your Life, on June 24, 2023. Potential N2 Actuality helps people grow from the seeds of potential into the reality of manifestation in critical areas of their lives.
Ten years ago, this was not possible; I looked at life with an “either/or” lens. But today, I see that life is a glorious “yes, and.” I can continue the stewardship of my father’s life’s work and expand in a direction that is dear to my heart.
Much appreciation to everyone who has supported me along this path in ways large and small. The road would have been much more difficult without you.
I excitedly anticipate May 24, 2033, when I might see what the long-term fruit of this expansion will be - for me, my father's legacy, and those we will touch. I invite you to join me.
With you on the journey,
April
